Laapataa Ladies’ Chhaya reveals why she was skeptical about her dialect during audition (Instagram/@chhaya.kadam.75)

Chhaya Kadam, known for her role as Manju Mai in Kiran Rao’s film “Laapataa Ladies,” recently shared her initial doubts about her dialect during auditions. Despite her fears, she delivered a remarkable performance that has earned her widespread praise.

Doubts About Dialect

When Chhaya Kadam auditioned for “Laapataa Ladies,” she was concerned about her Maharashtrian accent. Playing a character from Uttar Pradesh, she worried that her accent might not be suitable. Speaking to the Times of India, Chhaya recalled how scared she was. In her previous Hindi films, she always portrayed Maharashtrian women. This time, she had to convincingly play a UP lady.

Chhaya shared her concerns with the movie’s casting director, Romil Modi, who is also her friend. She would often tell him, “Romil, it won’t work. They will take someone from the Hindi-speaking belt, not a Marathi actress like me.” Despite her worries, Chhaya is grateful that Kiran Rao and Aamir Khan believed in her ability to bring Manju Mai to life.

Dedication to Learning

Chhaya is a dedicated learner. She would often call her dialect coach, Sonu Anand, even in the middle of the night to ensure she was getting the accent right. She appreciated Kiran Rao’s hard work on the film and enjoyed the challenge of mastering different dialects. “Every language has its own rhythm,” she said, “and I loved working on that.”

Passion for Acting

Chhaya Kadam is passionate about her characters and wants to continue exploring different roles. She believes that Kiran Rao is an amazing director and person. Chhaya remembered being offered a small role in Kiran Rao’s first film, “Dhobi Ghat,” but had to decline due to a surgery.

Although it took some time, Chhaya is finally receiving the recognition she deserves. She recently made her debut at the Cannes Film Festival with two films, “All We Imagine As Light” and “Sister Midnight.”

Conclusion

Chhaya Kadam’s journey in “Laapataa Ladies” is a testament to her dedication and talent. Overcoming her initial doubts about her dialect, she delivered a performance that resonated with audiences and critics alike. Her story is inspiring, showing that with hard work and determination, anything is possible.
