In a candid conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, Halsey described how her journey to the role unfolded organically. She and Ti West met to chat about their mutual interests in movies, music, and life in general. During their discussion, MaXXXine naturally came up, prompting Halsey to express her eagerness to audition.
Despite her initial uncertainty, she decided to send in an audition tape when West encouraged her to do so. To her astonishment, she received a callback, which initially left her in disbelief. “I was, like, ‘Shut up! Are you kidding me?’ Then the real panic set in because then I realized I had to actually then do it,” she recalled.
Preparing for Tabby Martin: Halsey’s Authentic Approach
Speaking about her preparation for the role of Tabby Martin, Halsey drew on her own roots, particularly her upbringing in New Jersey. She envisioned Tabby as someone yearning for a breakthrough in life, much like she once did. “Tabby really wants something amazing to happen for her. She’s looking for that moment, that burst of confidence,” Halsey explained. To bring authenticity to the character, she even incorporated a subtle New Jersey accent.
