The Birth of a Reality Show
Karan Johar recounted how the idea for Fabulous Lives of Bollywood Wives came to him during a flight to a funeral with four women. These women, who later became the stars of the show, were discussing their outfits for the funeral. This unexpected conversation about fashion amid such a serious event struck Johar as intriguing.
During an interview with Sucharita, Johar said, “It all started with me and the four women on our way to a funeral. On the flight, they were discussing their salwar kameez choices. Maheep Kapoor was too blingy and trying to justify it; another was too sober. I thought, ‘Someone has passed away, we are going to their funeral, and you are discussing your outfits?! Does anyone care?'”
This moment of candid conversation inspired Johar to create a show that would capture the dynamic energy and camaraderie of these women.
Upcoming Season and New Faces
The show, originally titled Fabulous Lives of Bollywood Wives, will return for its third season as Fabulous Lives vs Bollywood Wives. Alongside original cast members Maheep Kapoor, Neelam Kothari Soni, Seema Sajdeh, and Bhavana Pandey, the new season will introduce three fresh faces: Riddhima Kapoor Sahni, wife of Bharat Sahni and sister of Ranbir Kapoor; philanthropist Shalini Passi, wife of PASCO group chairman Sanjay Passi; and entrepreneur Kalyani Saha Chawla.
A Blend of Love and Critique
Since its debut in 2020, the show has garnered both praise and criticism. Some viewers love the entertainment value and genuine friendships portrayed, while others find it too scripted and focused on a superficial lifestyle. Despite mixed reviews, the show has captured the audience’s attention.
Reflecting on the feedback, Johar noted, “When people comment, ‘We were hating it but we couldn’t stop watching it,’ I see it as a job well done.” He also shared his excitement for the upcoming season, which he believes will be the best yet. Watching the new episodes, Johar found himself laughing out loud, much to the curiosity of his fellow passengers.
