Sumit Arora shares his experience of working with Kartik Aaryan and director Kabir Khan on the biographical film ‘Chandu Champion,’ revealing the challenges and excitement behind the scenes.
A Biographical Masterpiece
“Chandu Champion,” directed by Kabir Khan and written by Sumit Arora, tells the inspiring story of Murlikant Petkar, India’s first Paralympic gold medalist. Kartik Aaryan stars as Petkar, capturing his transformation from a young wrestler to an Army boxer who, after being paralyzed in the 1965 India-Pakistan conflict, became a swimming champion and won India’s first Paralympic gold in 1972.
The film, which hit theaters earlier this month, has received enthusiastic reviews. Sumit Arora shared his insights on working with Kartik Aaryan, emphasizing the actor’s eagerness to step out of his comedy comfort zone and tackle a challenging new role.
Kartik Aaryan’s Commitment
In an interview with Hindustan Times, Arora praised Aaryan’s dedication. “Working with him was an amazing experience. He has never done a role like this. People associate him with comedy, but he stepped into uncharted territory,” Arora said. “I think he was really hungry for this role and wanted to do something different. He has proved himself beyond doubt and delivered a performance of a lifetime through this film.”
Challenges in Scriptwriting
Arora also discussed the unique challenges of writing biopics. Unlike fictional characters, real-life adaptations are constrained by the actual experiences and perceptions of the people they portray. He noted that depicting Murlikant Petkar, a less-known figure compared to someone like Kapil Dev, required a careful balance between creative freedom and staying true to Petkar’s life and legacy.
Collaboration with Kabir Khan
Arora first met Kabir Khan during the 2017 screening of “Stree,” a film that earned Arora significant acclaim. Impressed by Arora’s work, Khan expressed interest in future collaborations. A few days later, Khan called Arora to work on the dialogues for “83,” a film about India’s cricket World Cup victory.
Reflecting on his collaboration with Khan, Arora said, “He eventually called me and told me he was making ’83 and asked me to work on the dialogues. I was more than happy as I had always been a huge cricket fan. Then ’83 happened, and we worked together. When we were thinking about what to do next, he told me the story of Murlikant Petkar. I was blown away.”
Arora described Kabir Khan as a wonderful person and a talented filmmaker, highlighting the joy of working with him.
