Kevin Costner, the Academy Award-winning actor, recently shared that his children have only seen an early version of his latest film, Horizon: An American Saga. At the film’s premiere in Los Angeles on June 24, Costner, who took on multiple roles including writer, director, producer, and lead actor in this Western epic, expressed his gratitude for the support he has received.
Kevin Costner’s Family Excitement and Premiere Presence
Costner delighted in sharing a personal story about his children’s eagerness to see the final version of Horizon: An American Saga. “I brought them with me to France, but they’re anxious to see it with no subtitles,” he said, laughing about their excitement.
Costner attended the premiere with his children. He has three adult children with his ex-wife Cindy Silva: Annie (40), Lily (37), and Joe (36); and a son, Liam (26), with former partner Bridget Rooney. He also has three younger children with his ex-wife Christine Baumgartner: Cayden Wyatt (17), Hayes Logan (15), and Grace Avery (14). At the premiere, Costner remarked that his children are always watching over him.
The Epic Journey of Horizon: An American Saga
Horizon: An American Saga delves into the allure of the Old West, exploring how it was won and lost through the struggles of many. Set between 1861 and 1865 during the Civil War, the story follows families, friends, and foes trying to understand what it means to be American.
Costner not only stars in the film but also wrote, directed, and produced it. The sequel, Horizon: An American Saga Chapter 2, is set to release on August 16. Costner began working on the film in 1988 and even named his son Hayes after the main character, Hayes Ellison.
Costner’s Dedication to the Project
“Horizon is incredibly meaningful to me. It’s really been the hardest thing I’ve ever done, but it’s exactly what I want to do,” Costner told PEOPLE in 2022. He explained that while finishing the first part took everything he had, he remains deeply committed to the project. Throughout his career, Costner has made movies based on his own vision rather than following popular trends.
The film features a star-studded cast including Sienna Miller, Sam Worthington, Luke Wilson, Ella Hunt, Isabelle Fuhrman, Jamie Campbell Bower, Jena Malone, Owen Crow Shoe, Tatanka Means, Wasé Chief, and Michael Rooker. Costner’s 15-year-old son Hayes also appears in the film. “I kind of did it on purpose, so he could be hanging out with me,” Costner shared, adding that the same goes for Cayden and Grace.
A Western Legacy
Costner, well-known for his Western films, has a long-standing fascination with the genre. His directorial debut, Dances with Wolves, won the Academy Award for Best Picture and Best Director in 1990. Reflecting on the genre, Costner explained that people often compare themselves to previous generations and think about what was at stake.
At the Los Angeles premiere, Costner expressed his gratitude to Warner Bros. for their support of Horizon: An American Saga. He appreciated the studio’s efforts in creating a celebratory environment for the film that he and his team worked so hard on.
