Nana Patekar, known for his incredible acting talent, recently shared an interesting story about his experience with Anil Kapoor during the making of the 1989 film “Parinda.” Here’s what happened and why Nana turned down the latest “Welcome” movie.
The “Parinda” Incident
Nana Patekar recalled that he was initially cast to play the role of Jackie Shroff’s character, Anil Kapoor’s elder brother, in “Parinda.” However, Anil Kapoor had him removed from the film. The reason? Anil didn’t want Nana to become a star.
In a recent chat with Lallantop, Nana shared that Naseeruddin Shah was originally supposed to play the character of Anna, which Nana eventually portrayed. But when Naseer backed out, Nana was offered the role.
Nana later asked Anil if he had influenced the director, Vidhu Vinod Chopra, to drop him from the movie. Anil admitted, saying, “I thought, why should I make Nana the star?” Anil believed Nana would have outshone everyone if he had played the lead role.
Nana’s response to Anil was, “Didn’t I tell you that no matter what role you give me, I would still become the star? Nobody would look at you.”
Reconciliation and Moving Forward
Nana mentioned that things are fine between him and Anil Kapoor now, but back then, Anil was a big star and used his influence. According to Nana, Anil requested Vinod to remove him from the film, and Vinod complied. After a few months, Vinod came back to Nana and offered him the role of Anna.
Initially, Nana was angry but agreed to do the part. He insisted on being paid his market rate, which he saw as a standard expectation, not a favor. He also rewrote his part in the film.
Nana also hinted that he had other issues with Vidhu Vinod Chopra and that whenever they meet, he hopes it will be the last time.
Why Nana and Anil Said No to “Welcome to the Jungle”
Nana Patekar also explained why he and Anil Kapoor turned down the upcoming third installment of the “Welcome” series, titled “Welcome to the Jungle,” directed by Ahmed Khan.
Nana revealed that the filmmakers approached them, but they declined because there wasn’t much of a story, and they didn’t find it enjoyable.
